The BSE (Broadcasting Satellite Experimental) and BS-2 (Broadcasting Satellite 2) series were the first generation of Japanese direct broadcasting satellites initially developed for the Japanese Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and for the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK).

The satellites were built by Toshiba with assistance by RCA Astro. They were actively three-axis stabilized employing zero-momentum wheels and hydrazine thrusters. The spacecraft carried two active and one spare 100 Watt 14/12 GHz transponders.
