First flight of Molniya. First attempt in the history of sending an object to another planet. First Martian probe, first Soviet interplanetary mission. The launch was a failure due to a malfunction on the Block I stage.

Marsnik are the first space probes to leave Earth's orbit. The spacecraft carried three scientific instruments in order to investigate Mars. They are as follows: - Ultraviolet Spectrometer - Radiation Detector - Cosmic-ray Detector
