Mission Details

Venera 4

Venera 4 (in Russian: Венера-4, "Venus-4") is a Soviet space probe from the Venera Program launched on June 12, 1967. A little heavier than the series of Venera 2 and 3, it was the first successful device data transmission during the parachute descent.

The 383 kg ovoid capsule descended into the atmosphere on October 18, 1967 and retransmitted measurements on the density, temperature and atmospheric composition of Venus. The orbital spacecraft relayed this information to the USSR, as well as to Jodrell Bank.
