Mission Details

1K n°2 (Korabl-Sputnik 2)

Two dogs were launched on this mission in a Vostok 1-K spacecraft. Soon after launch, longitudinal vibrations in one of the strap-ons caused it to break off at T+19 seconds. Around T+30 seconds the whole vehicle disintegrated, sending boosters flying in random directions and crashing into the steppe. Flight controllers jettisoned the descent module from the rocket, but the parachutes were not able to deploy quickly enough and the dogs were killed on impact. This failure caused a bit of an uproar because a similar problem had plagued earlier launches and was supposed to have been fixed.
