Mission Details

1K n°5 (Korabl-Sputnik 3)

This launch had 2 dogs as usual, Damka and Krasavka. The boosters and core stage preformed nominally, but the rocket was using a new, untested upper stage called Blok E, which malfunctioned soon after ignition, losing thrust. Since it couldn't make it to orbit, the mission was aborted, and the dogs underwent a rough ballistic reentry and landed 3500 kilometers downrange in -40C conditions. The rescue operation took several days but the dogs were recovered alive and returned to the space center.
