Mission Details

Astrolab Mission 1

Astrolab, a lunar rover developer, has signed an agreement with SpaceX to send its first rover to the moon on a future Starship flight. The rover, named FLEX (Flexible Logistics and Exploration), will be part of a payload on a Starship lunar lander mission. This marks SpaceX's first commercial contract for lunar cargo delivery.

The FLEX rover, designed by Astrolab, will carry 1,000 kilograms of customer payloads and will be a rideshare payload on a Starship mission landing in the moon's south polar region. Its ability to cover long distances makes it less dependent on precise landing locations. Astrolab has not disclosed the specific customers for this mission but mentioned various planned applications, such as resource utilization and data collection.

Astrolab's modular design for the FLEX rover allows for adaptive utility, enabling the addition of new implements or cargo over time to expand its capabilities. The company is also preparing to offer the FLEX rover to NASA for their Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) competition, which will be used by astronauts on future lunar missions. Astrolab hopes NASA adopts a services model for the LTV program, similar to the Human Landing System landers.
